On Saturday, August 13th, the Summer Star team had the wonderful privilege of releasing a spotted turtle back into the wild. The turtle was brought to us by our friends at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University after it had been struck by a vehicle and rehabilitated. Given the current drought in Massachusetts, finding a suitable release location was imperative. We selected the beaver pond along Wrack Meadow Brook that has taken shape over the past year, as it still contains enough water to support the turtle. While releasing the spotted turtle, we also saw a green heron and a northern waterthrush, two new species for the sanctuary that would likely not be here if it were not for the beaver pond.
